AirNet Announces Ready-For-3G AdaptaCell Base Station
Melbourne, Florida -- AirNet Communications Corporation today introduced its new AdaptaCell Base Transceiver Station (BTS), which allows wireless operators to smoothly migrate through the anticipated GSM-GPRS-EDGE-3G high-speed data evolution path. The software-defined, broadband AdaptaCell is shipping now and allows wireless service providers to adopt new high-speed data protocols without installing new hardware, only simple software upgrades.
"The AdaptaCell continues our commitment to offering the greatest infrastructure value possible," said Dr. Lee Hamilton, President and CEO of AirNet. "Just one base station is all an operator needs to deploy any of the high-speed data protocols on the way to Third Generation technology (3G). No other vendor can make that claim."
The AdaptaCell's software-defined architecture is designed to enable vendors to operate multiple protocols on the base station at the same time. Some of the AdaptaCell's channels can be dedicated to GSM voice, while other run GPRS, EDGE, 3G, or any combination simultaneously. This protocol flexibility is what makes the AdaptaCell the most advanced 3G-ready base station in the industry.
"Other base stations are not so easily adapted to the new high-speed data protocols," explained Glenn Ehley, AirNet Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "On a traditional base station, new hardware will be required for EDGE. What's worse, when it's time to support 3G, operators will need to throw it all away and start over again. This is why the AdaptaCell is such a revolutionary product for wireless networks."
In addition to facilitating high-speed data migration, the AdaptaCell also supports the AirSite® Backhaul Free Base Station and the new Triple Capacity AirSite Backhaul Free Base Station, which allow operators to increase network coverage while eliminating T1/E1 lines or dedicated microwave links. Up to twelve AirSites can be supported by a single AdaptaCell BTS.
AirNet Communications Corporation, based in Melbourne, Florida, designs, manufactures, distributes, and supports best-in-class GSM (GSM-900, GSM-1800, and GSM-1900) wireless infrastructure solutions. AirNet is the only company commercially deploying software-defined, broadband base transceiver stations (BTS) that are software-upgradeable to support next generation high-speed data services like GPRS, EDGE, and 3G. AirNet's AirSite Backhaul Free Base Station and new Triple Capacity AirSite Base Station do not require a dedicated T1 line or fixed microwave backhaul facility and thus save operators thousands of dollars per year per base station in backhaul costs. AirNet was awarded the 1998 GSM World Award for Best Technical Innovation.
