Melbourne, Florida -- AirNet Communications Corporation announced today that it has successfully completed interoperability testing between its Base Station Subsystem (BSS) and a Lucent Mobile Switching Center (MSC) for deployment by Carolina PCS I Limited Partnership, which does business in South Carolina as Carolina Phone Company. The testing was done over a two week period and utilizes the open GSM A interface for interoperability between the BSS and MSC.
AirNet is the BSS vendor for Carolina Phone's Phase I operations, which includes the Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson markets, for a Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) system.
"We are pleased to announce that the interoperability testing went quickly and smoothly," said Mike Green, President and CEO of Carolina Phone. "This way we are able to utilize the best of both worlds - the 3G-ready AirNet BSS and Lucent's Network Switching System."
"This highlights the power of the open GSM interface," said Dr. Lee Hamilton, President and CEO of AirNet. "The fact that the testing only took two weeks and was completed with nothing more than a little fine-tuning shows how easily the AirNet BSS can be interfaced with any GSM-compliant switch."
AirNet now has successfully interfaced with four MSCs including Nortel, Lucent, Tecore, and Telos.
The Carolina Phone system will deploy AirNet's new AdaptaCell software-defined broadband base transceiver station (BTS) in densely populated areas, while remaining cells will be configured with AirSite® Backhaul Free Base Stations or new Triple Capacity AirSite Backhaul Free Base Stations.
"Carolina Phone made the strategic decision to select two complimenting world class leaders for their initial wireless equipment requirements," said Glenn Ehley, AirNet Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Not only does the AirNet BSS interface with any GSM-compliant switch, but it also gives companies a clear migration path to 3G. Because it is software-defined, the AdaptaCell BTS can incorporate new high-speed data protocols, including GPRS, EDGE, and 3G, with no new hardware. Simple software upgrades are all that's needed."
Carolina Phone owns wireless licenses for the nine contiguous Basic Trading Areas (BTAs) in South Carolina as well as portions of Georgia and North Carolina. Carolina Phone's licensed area covers approximately 3.5 million potential subscribers throughout the region. The AirNet infrastructure includes an operations and maintenance center, base station controller, transcoder rate adapter unit and associated cell sites. This deployment completes an order received from Carolina Phone that was announced last October.
